A server cabinet (rack cabinet) keeps devices such as servers, switches, modems, firewalls and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) together in a tidy, secure and ventilated space. Choosing the right cabinet extends the life of your equipment and makes it easier to step in when something fails.
What is a rack unit?
The internal height of a cabinet is measured in U (rack units). 1U = 44.45 mm (1.75 inches). For example, a 1U server takes up one unit and a 2U server takes up two. The standard device width is 19 inches.
Wall-mount or floor-standing (rack) cabinet?
- Wall-mount cabinets are usually between 4U and 20U. They are ideal for a switch, modem and a few network devices in small offices, and take up no floor space because they are mounted on the wall.
- Floor-standing (rack) cabinets are usually between 22U and 47U. They are the choice for server rooms that house several servers, storage units and a UPS. The most common size is 42U, about 2 metres tall.
Width and depth
Cabinets are usually 600 mm or 800 mm wide. An 800 mm width leaves side space for cable management when there is a lot of cabling. Depth should match your equipment: 600 mm may be enough for network devices, while rack servers usually need 1000–1200 mm. Before buying, check the depth of your deepest device and add room for cables.
Installation tips
Ventilation
Devices produce heat. Perforated doors, fan modules and the cooling of the room the cabinet stands in should be planned together. Fitting blanking panels in empty U spaces directs the airflow and reduces heating.
Power distribution and UPS
Use a power distribution unit (PDU) inside the cabinet and power critical devices through a UPS. Placing heavy devices (UPS, storage) at the bottom of the cabinet improves stability.
Cable management and labelling
Cable management panels and coloured, labelled cables let you find the right connection within minutes when something fails.
Security and grounding
Lockable front and rear doors prevent unauthorised access. Grounding the cabinet is necessary both for equipment safety and to prevent electrical problems.
